South African Architect wins at Regional LafargeHolcim Awards

The Regional LafargeHolcim Awards were held in Nairobi, Kenya on 7 September 2017. The biennial Awards celebrate projects and visions for sustainable construction. This year South African Architect, Heidi van Eeden, was announced as the winner of the Next Generation category for her work in developing new sustainable methods of brick-making in the Soshanguve township in Gauteng.

Van Eeden’s project, Brick-Works, is based on an analysis of unsustainable practices in the production of fired bricks. Her projects extends to proposing a set of principles to improve the viable operation of the brick making industry. Brick-Works offers a sensitive, bottom-up approach to community development through sustainable industry.

“Winning this award is a humbling experience from a personal point of view and shows that South Africa is globally recognised for its creativity in promoting growth and prosperity for our communities,” said van Eeden.

Sustainability in building is fast gaining significance in the Middle East and Africa region,  particularly amongst female professionals and young graduates in architecture and engineering.

Lafarge South Africa congratulates Heidi van Eeden on this achievement and is proud to be a company that identifies and fosters innovation through young and upcoming entrepreneurs in our communities.
