Lafarge South Africa, a member of the LafargeHolcim Group, can confirm that an estimated 800 employees will embark on a protected strike on Thursday evening, 11 February 2016. Following extensive negotiations, the company and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), have not been able to reach an agreement over several matters.
Lafarge South Africa is offering a salary increase of 7.5% while NUM is demanding 8.5%. Other issues include acting allowances, salary gaps and housing grants. The company is offering an acting allowance of 30% of the monthly basic salary while NUM is demanding 35%.
NUM is also demanding a housing grant of R100 000 whilst Lafarge South Africa is offering R50 000. The union has additionally submitted a proposal regarding salary discrepancies. Lafarge South Africa has recommended that the two matters be dealt with by a special task team comprising of union representatives and management.
"We have put contingency plans in place and will monitor the situation closely," said Unathi Batyashe-Fillis, Country Manager: Communications & Public Affairs. "We are committed to negotiating with our employees until an agreement is reached as soon as possible."
Negotiations are continuing.
