Lafarge South Africa, a member of the LafargeHolcim Group, continues negotiations with the National Union of Mineworkers this weekend in an effort to end industrial action by NUM members at a number of its operations across South Africa.
A document from the NUM leadership tabled on February 18, 2016 confirms NUM's agreement to the company's offer of an eight percent pay increase.
"Lafarge South Africa continues to negotiate in good faith with NUM to bring the industrial action to an end," says Unathi Batyashe-Fillis, Country Manager for Communications and Public Affairs.
The company also tabled a R70 000 housing grant offer, which is an increase from the initial offer of R50 000.
Lafarge South Africa has noted NUM's proposal around salary gaps, and has proposed a process where both the company's management and NUM leadership will come together to find a solution that benefits employees. Lafarge South Africa is also open to engaging an independent party with the aim of ensuring this matter is dealt with in a fair and transparent manner.
Batayshe-Fillis added that while operations remain unaffected, Lafarge South Africa was aware of areas where orders were not being processed as fast as normal. Lafarge South Africa is in constant contact with all its customers to address the issue.
"We thank all our stakeholders for their understanding and patience," she said. She reiterated the company's commitment to engage with the union leaders.
"We believe our offer is more than fair, and we hope that it will be acceptable to the union so we can bring the industrial action to a speedy end for the benefit of our employees, our customers and the company," said Batyashe-Fillis.
