Castcrete solution from Innovative Lafarge technology

.Lafarge South Africa continues to demonstrate its leadership in cement and concrete innovation with the launch of CastCrete bulk cement. Designed specifically to meet the needs of the precast and ready-mixed concrete producers in coastal regions, this quality cement offers excellent all-round strength performance, enhanced workability and concrete with superior durability.

The company is the local presence of the international Lafarge Group, a world leader in building materials with unparalleled technical capability. Locally, Lafarge South Africa has a well-recognised track record for providing the local construction industry with innovative products, solutions and services in line with the Group's brand baseline of ‘Building better cities'. This embodies its ambition to contribute innovative solutions for the construction of cities that, with more housing, are more compact, while also being more durable, more beautiful and a more desirable living environment for local communities.

Working closely with their coastal customers, Lafarge South Africa identified that in general these customers would prefer not to blend cement themselves and needed a consistent quality high performance product. "We believe that our products should add value to a customer's business," comments Desmond Maharaj, GM of Lafarge South Africa's Cement business line. "Reflecting this, we have the widest range of designed for purpose products covering every application."

Lafarge CastCrete offers precast and ready-mixed concrete producers in coastal regions an innovative cement designed to meet their need for excellent all-round strength performance, enhanced workability and concrete with superior durability.

CastCrete is a bulk cement formulated from Portland cement clinker and siliceous fly ash, together with a performance enhancing additive, at the Lafarge Richards Bay clinker grinding plant. The result is a pozzolanic fly ash cement that embodies the company's extensive experience with incorporating the properties of a quality fly ash to produce cost-effective, high performance, workable mixes and concretes. Lafarge South Africa's innovative formulations have proven their strength and durability in a wide range of coastal construction projects, including Richards Bay Harbour extensions, Coega Harbour and Mozal aluminium smelter in Mozambique

"The properties of CastCrete are tightly controlled at our plant in a way that is not possible with a general blending operation," says Lafarge South Africa's Dirk Odendaal, Technical Sales Manager - Cement Product Line. "To meet the productivity needs of manufacturers of precast units such as lintels, garden benches, bricks and blocks, we formulate for a 2-day strength of at least 18 MPa and a 28-day strength in excess of 48 MPa. The fly ash enhances workability, which is also a huge benefit for ready-mixed concrete producers."

Other significant advantages for coastal producers of larger precast units and concrete structures are the increased resistance to sulphate and chloride attack provided by CastCrete's formulation, as well as the product's contribution to reducing and controlling the heat of hydration.

"What differentiates us in the marketplace is our investment in research and industrial engineering and our focus on customer service," adds Maharaj. "We ensure that end-users enjoy consistent high quality and performance from Lafarge products, tailored to their needs."
