Lafarge Cement

Lafarge Cement operates a 2.4 million ton per annum cement clinker facility at Lichtenburg in the North West Province. It is one of the largest and most technically advanced cement works in the country. In 2006, the company demonstrated its confidence in the country's economy by announcing a R1.2 billion project to increase its cement capacity by one million tons per year. The project was the largest investment the South African cement industry had seen for over two decades.

The investment had two components: a new kiln and clinker line at Lafarge Cement's flagship cement works at Lichtenburg, in the North West Province, and a one million ton of cement per year grinding station on a greenfield site at Randfontein.

The Lafarge Cement Head Office is located at Longmeadow in the eastern suburbs of Johannesburg. Strategically located distribution depots and sales offices provide optimal services to Lafarge customers.

World Leader

Lafarge is the world leader in construction materials and is committed to act as a responsible industrial player in each country where it operates. The Group intends to maintain its status as a sustainable development role model for the cement industry and can be justly proud of its progress in reducing its environmental footprint, taking care of employees' health and safety, respecting and contributing to wider initiatives in society.

Lichtenburg

Lichtenburg Works is our flagship cement production site and is one of the largest and most technically advanced cement facilities in Southern Africa. It is strategically located close to Tswana Lime Quarry, a source of quality limestone, the primary raw material for cement. The Works processes the cement clinker from which our plants have the capacity to produce over 3 million tons of cement per year.

Randfontein

The Lafarge Randfontein Grinding Station has been designed and built with a strong focus on efficiency in all key performance areas of the cement production process, health, safety and the environment. The Randfontein Grinding Station produced its first cement in September 2009 and is consolidating Lafarge's position as one of the leading cement producers in Southern Africa.

Sustainable Development

Over thirty years ago, Lafarge openly committed the Group to a policy of sustainability. In keeping with this strong leadership, Lafarge Cement in South Africa recognises it has a responsibility to use its resources wisely and in as "environmentally-friendly" a manner as possible to ensure that it operates sustainability.

However, the issues of conserving non-renewable resources and protecting our fragile environment are key parts of a broader sustainable development picture. At Lafarge we aim to make sustainability considerations a part of all our activities and bring our values to life everywhere that we operate.
