PROJECTS

1. Support for people with visual impairment

In 2011, the Lafarge Community Trust partnered with the South African National Council for the Blind for the improvement of matric results and skills transfer in Maths, Science and Technology. Through the donation of R548,900 from the Trust, the Council will implement the following plans to contribute to the empowerment of this marginalised sector of the community:

  • Host an annual winter school for visually impaired matriculants
  • Train 42 educators to improve their teaching capacity (Maths & Science)
  • Braille Literacy training
  • Distribution of slates and styluses to 380 people who have learnt Braille through the Braille Literacy
  • Host annual White Cane day to create awareness on visual impairment and distribute White Canes to people with visual impairment

During July 2011, SANCB made history by hosting 130 learners at the first ever Matric Winter School for learners from 8 Special School for the Blind in South Africa. The workshop covered revision for the following subjects: Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy, Physical Science, History, CAT, English, Business Studies and Economics. Jace Nair, the Council's National Executive Director, inspired the learners at the opening of the workshop and he encouraged the learners to take this opportunity very serious as this is the first in the history of South Africa.

2. Ntwashini Community Trust (NCT)

Ntwashini community is situated within the Kwadukuza Local Municipality and Ilembe within the Ntwashini Community Trust land. The NCT has been operating since 2007 and focuses on implementing community development initiatives. The Lafarge Community Trust committed over R1.3 million over a three year period. This support will:

  • Provide NCT members with critical skills required for empowerment
  • Provide equipment and infrastructure that facilitates effective learning at St Christopher Primary School
  • Create awareness on available opportunities and possibilities for community development

The Trust engages in consultative processes with relevant stakeholders for effective planning and resource leveraging.
