PROGRAMMES

 

1. Bursary Programme

 

The Education Trust's Bursary Programme was launched in 2009 with sponsorships allocated to 80 students studying towards engineering qualifications. The scheme does not merely target top achievers but sponsors students who have passed matric and show character and consistent performance. In 2009, the Trustees were rewarded with a 97% pass rate for the first year students.

 

Since establishment, the Trust spends approximately R1 million annually on the programme. In addition to the sponsorship, the students are brought to the head office once a year for a career guidance session and interaction with Trustees. The company also assists those students who are required to undertake formal experiential training to complete their qualification and find suitable opportunities.

 

To date, a number of students have been placed for in-service training; ten students completed their studies and are employed; one student is doing a Masters Degree and is mentored by both his institution and Lafarge. These achievements are contributing to poverty alleviation and empowerment of individuals, families and communities.

 

Currently, 54 students are sponsored and will participate at the 2011 Meet and Greet Event where students will meet and interact with Trustees and the Lafarge Family. This year the event will be marked by the launch of the Lafarge Education Trust Mentorship Programme where the Lafarge staff will adopt and mentor students and arrange a site visit to the Lafarge Cement Plant in Lichtenburg for exposure to the Lafarge operations. In addition, there will be awards for excellence.

 

2. Provision of Education facilities to the University of Fort Hare

 

The Lafarge Education Trust has committed R1.7 million to the Project Budget in the form of a grant aimed to refurbish the Physics Department Laboratories and capacitate the faculty to ensure effective and efficient learning and quality education.

 

The grant covered:

  • Purchasing of equipment for various experiments in Mechanics, Heat, Thermodynamics, Electricity and Electronics
  • Staffing - two senior lecturers and a laboratory assistant were appointed

Completed in October 2010, a plaque commemoratin the projet was unveiled by the Honorable Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande.

 

3. Whole School development programme

 

The Trust decided that creating a sustainable, healthy, education environment required a holistic approach, which involves working with schools and all stakeholders in a community.

 

Bodibe Village Project

 

Bodibe community has a long-standing association with the Lafarge Lichtenburg Cement Plant. Established in 2009, the project has been implemented in partnership with the Adopt-a-School Foundation through their Whole School Development model. Government, corporate and other civil society organisations (NGO's and FBO's) are engaged through consultative processes. The Lafarge Education Trust launched a 5 year, R25 million, upliftment programme for eleven schools, which embraces infrastructure and skills development, together with nutrition and social skills promotion through the revival of sports.

 

To date, the following have been accomplished:

 

Completion and official handover of the following infrastructure development projects:

  • 13 classrooms (7 classrooms in Molekane Primary School, 2 in Mmuagabo Primary School and 2 in Matlaba Primary School)
  • Ablution blocks at Bodibe Middle School and E.H. Mogase Primary School
  • Libraries at Tau Rapulana High School, Naletsana Primary School and Mokakana Primary School
  • Renovations at Motlhako Primary School

 

Educator and learner developments to complement infrastructure:

  • Executive leadership training for 11 school principals at Wits School of Education
  • Computer training for school management teams, educator representatives and school administrative assistants from the 11 schools
  • Development of Lafarge Dream League - soccer league (22 soccer teams established_
  • Environmental and life skills training for 8 primary schools
  • Language Literacy Program and resources for learners and educators

 

 Other achievements

  • Expansion of sporting codes to include netball and athletics
  • Dental and eye care in the schools
  • Over 350 temporary jobs have been created for the local community and parents of learners
  • 11 local SMME's benefited from the project
  • Project management and technical skills transferred to Team Leaders and Labourers at all the schools
  • Transfer of leadership and computer skills to the school management team and administrative assistance
  • Improvement of reading and writing skills to learners with one learner winning an essay competition
  • Establishment of working relationship between the school principals, school governing bodies, Tribal Council and Department of Education
  • Provision of soccer equipment and kits to 11 schools
  • Uplifted the spirit of soccer and cultivate the culture of sports when 60 learners were taken on real experience to a professional soccer match during the FIFA Confederation Cup at Royal Bafokeng Stadium
  • Establishment of partnership project implementation Molteno Institute for Language and Literacy, Room to Read, Biblionef, Tshepo Education Network, Dreamfields, Scouts Environmental Centre Mafikeng, Schoolnet, Imbumba Technologies and Communications and Wits School of Education.

 

Mzimela Community Project

 

While each community has its own unique problems and ways of dealing with them, the learnings from the various projects among the schools in Bodibe were successfully applied in KwaZulu-Natal. The Trust assists the Mzimela community which is a neighbour of the Lafarge Richards Bay Quarry.

 

Since 2010, the Trust has invested an amount of over R1 million annually for development interventions in Mzimela community (a village in the Mthunzini District Municipality). Achievements include renovation of the Masakhane School (Zungu area) and construction of the Administration Block at Zimeme High School. One of the conditions of agreeing to a rant for the Zimeme Project was that the contractor building the new facilities had to train and use local unemployed labour. Lack of running water for the school posed a challenge during the construction, the situation was turned into an opportunity for job creation. A portion of the money from the grant was allocated to pay local women a small daily wage to carry water from a nearby borehole to a storage tank at the school. The construction of Administration Block at Zimeme School was the important first step in planning, implementing and growing a broader development programme in the Mzimela area. It established a base where ideas could be demonstrated and tested.

 

Construction at Zimeme addressed just one of the many challenges the school faces, hence a need for comprehensive community mobilisation and visioning for holistic responses to education challenges. Currently, 26 schools in the Mzimela area (which is under the leadership of Nkosi Mzimela) participated in a situational assessment conducted by Adopt-a-School Foundation. Development of a long term plan of action is underway.

 

Some lessons learned:

  • Schools only improve if you build good school stakeholders (educators, learners and communities)
  • The bursar scheme has been an interesting exercise in social support - young students respond well to having a mentor
  • The Trust cannot be a one-stop solution. Partnerships that capitalise on the synergies with existing NGO's are often the most effective solution. Ultimately the aim is to partner with all relevant stakeholders to optimise the use of available resources
  • Involvement of all for the realisation of a better society. An example of a giving society is the story of Kamohelo Xaba, a 10 year old girl who donated R600 to the Trust's book drive to equip Bodibe libraries.
